Baked Alaska

  1. Position oven rack at lowest level of oven. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

  2. Place egg whites and salt in medium bowl. Beat at high speed with mixer or rotary beater until soft peaks form. Egg white mixture should be smooth and satiny in appearance and should form peaks that bend over slightly when the beaters are raised.

  3. Gradually beat in sugar, one tablespoon at a time. Continue beating until egg white mixture is glossy and stands in stiff peaks when beaters are raised. The mixture is soft meringue.

  4. Arrange cake slices 3 inches apart on large baking sheet. Place 1 scoop of ice cream in the center of each cake slice. Working as quickly as possible, spread meringue over ice cream and cake slices. Meringue should completely cover ice cream and cake and seal them to baking sheet.

  5. Bake 4-5 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer Baked Alaska to serving plates with wide spatula. Serve immediately.
