Ingredients

¹⁄₃ cup shortening
1 ¹⁄₃ cup sugar
1 ¹⁄₂ tsp vanilla
2 ¹⁄₄ cup cake flour
3 tsp baking powder
¹⁄₂ tsp salt
¹⁄₂ cup (1 1/2 squares) shaved bitter chocolate (may use bittersweet chocolate chips instead of chocolate squares)
1 cup milk
3 egg whites

Instructions

Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla. Sift flour, baking powder and salt. Stir ¼ of the dry ingredients into the cream mixture. Stir in the rest of the dry ingredients and chocolate alternately with the milk. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Bake in two 8-9 inch layer pans at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes.
