Cream shortening, vanilla and syrup. Sift flour, salt and baking powder. Stir ¼ of the dry ingredients into the cream mixture. Stir in the rest of the dry ingredients alternately with milk. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Bake in two prepared 8-9 inch layer pans at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes.
