Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease well and dust with flour 2 round 9 inch layer pans or 1 oblong 13 x 9 pan. Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Beat in milk and cream of tartar/baking soda mix. Sift flour and stir into shortening mixture, then stir in nuts. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Bake layers 30-35 minutes or oblong 35-40 minutes. Cool and frost.
