Mix together shortening, butter, powdered sugar and vanilla thoroughly. Mix in flour, salt and oats thoroughly. Divide in halves. Shape each half into a roll 1½ inches in diameter. Coat each roll with chocolate shot for one of the variations. Wrap in waxed paper. Chill 1 hour or more. Slice ¼ inch thick. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 12-15 minutes in moderate oven (350 degrees).
Rolls of cookie dough may be rolled in grated semi-sweet chocolate, chopped nuts, shredded coconut or chopped candied fruit.
